What does “Savonnerie” mean?

Pronounced ‘sav-ən-ri'; (rhymes with gluten-free), savonnerie is French for soap factory. It was chosen to reflect not only the type of products we produce but also their artisan quality.

Are your products only for people with Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance?

No. While our products were specifically created for people with gluten intolerance and allergies, they will be enjoyed by anyone looking for gentle, non-irritating alternatives to commercial, mass produced bath and skincare products.

Individuals who suffer with chemical sensitivities or intolerance to perfumes will find the products helpful since all of our products are fragrance-free, contain no essential oils or other strong smelling herbals and have little to no smell.

People with allergies, other sensitivities and dry or troubled skin will especially enjoy them due to their high quality, gentleness and the fact that we pay special attention to the allergen status of each product.

Are your products paraben free and hypoallergenic?

Yes, all of our products were formulated to be hypoallergenic and free of common allergens like: parabens, gluten or wheat, casein or dairy, soy, corn, egg, peanuts, fish or shellfish derivatives, sulfites, tar, fragrance or perfume, and dyes or colorants.

Are your products compatible with the Feingold Program™?

Yes, all of our products have been validated by the Feingold Association as compatible with the Feingold Program and can be found in the Feingold Program Shopping Guide.

Why does it matter if there is gluten in skincare products?

It is important to avoid gluten containing bath and skin care products when any of the following conditions exist:

  • If the gluten containing product can reach the mouth directly or by a transfer from another source such as hands, hair, kissing or bath water.
  • When the skin barrier is broken – larger particles than usual, such as gluten proteins, can be absorbed through damaged skin such as cracked, scraped, rashy, or shaven areas.
  • When using gluten containing products on the skin causes you uncomfortable symptoms.

For children the unintentional transfer of gluten to their mouth is a definite problem.  Bath and hair products that run down the face and lips or are rinsed off into tub water also poses a problem for a child; most mothers have caught their child sucking on a wash cloth or drinking bath water.

It’s not always necessary to ingest gluten for symptoms to occur.  A certain percentage of people with Celiac Disease or other forms of gluten intolerance can not use products containing gluten on their skin; this is true despite the conventional wisdom stating that gluten is usually only a problem when eaten.

People sensitive to topical gluten may even be unaware that ingredients in products that they are using on their bodies are the cause of their itching, dryness, rash or other skin problems.  Over the years we’ve been surprised by the sheer volume of customer who tell us that they have resolved their skin or scalp issues by changing to gluten-free products.

Our advice is to evaluate your skin and health; if you are doing well then this is most likely a non-issue for you.  If you experience symptoms despite a gluten free diet, or if you have persistent skin or scalp problems, then a change to gluten free skincare products may make a big difference to you.

Do your products contain nuts or nut oils?

Gluten Free Savonnerie products are free of peanuts and traditionally recognized tree nuts or their derivatives.  In 2007, coconut and shea butter were added to the tree nut allergen list.  Coconut oil and shea butter are used in some of our products.

Are Gluten Free Savonnerie products made of natural or synthetic ingredients?

The Gluten Free Savonnerie was developed for people that have Celiac Disease, other gluten sensitivities or allergies to plant materials.  We keep the formulas very simple, try to work with natural ingredients when possible and still meet the needs of our customer who can’t tolerate common plant materials.

The product line is 100% natural with the exception of the moisturizing lotion, which is 97.1% natural, and the shampoo and conditioner which are composed of man-made ingredients.

Are your products tested on animals?

No, we do not test our products on animals;  we use human product testers – definitely cruelty free.  The entire Gluten-Free Savonnerie product line is Vegan.
